AI: Houston Methodist, AWS, OpenEvidence ($1 Billion)

Houston Methodist, AWS, and OpenEvidence.

What’s going on with them and why should you care?

Let’s cover that in the next 4 minutes.

What’s going on with them?

AI computer vision created a 15% bump in OR capacity for Houston Methodist Hospital

Houston Methodist adopted Apella, which uses AI and ambient sensor technology to provide a 360° view of operating rooms. This allows the AI to forecast scheduling changes throughout the day and identify opportunities to improve resource productivity.

Of course, it’s all done without compromising care-quality and significantly decreases perioperative inefficiencies.

As a result, ORs are utilized with maximum efficiency, allowing surgeons to operate on more patients each day and improving care delivery.

AWS expands healthcare AI through new Memorial Sloan Kettering partnership

The goal is to build an up-to-date longitudinal data resource for cancer research at MSK.

In addition to this, the companies hope to use it for validating and improving cancer treatments with MSKs partners.

The tool will allow providers to better track and predict patients’ cancer changes over time and offer a roadmap to more personalized treatments.

It’s by no means perfect yet, and it likely never will be as every model has its limitations.

But, the collaboration between enterprises like AWS and MSK in building such models is a great way to evaluate the widespread use of AI in healthcare.

OpenEvidence (AI healthcare startup) raised from Sequoia at a $1,000,000,000 valuation

The new $75 million is being used to scale the company’s chatbot for doctors.

Daniel Nadler, the founder, describes the chatbot as an AI copilot to assist doctors in point-of-care diagnostics.

The company’s recent partnership means that the model will continue to be trained on The New England Journal of Medicine with the hopes of augmenting the trust patients have in providers.

So how much does the bot cost?

It’s actually free.

They make their money off of advertising.

In fact, one of the reasons Sequoia’s investment lead, Pat Grady, found the company so alluring is because of how closely doctors work with one another.

When one doctor starts using the chatbot, others get curious and start using it too (organic marketing at its finest).

In other words, this is a consumer internet company disguised as a healthcare business!

Why should you care?

Because each of these headlines demonstrates a different utility of AI in healthcare:

1. Houston Methodist is using it for efficiency gains and allowing doctors to treat more patients, faster.

2. MSK and AWS are using it for research and predictive analytics to further personalize cancer treatments.

3. OpenEvidence is using it to provide assistance with point-of-care clinical decision-making.

Is this an exhaustive list?

Absolutely not.

AI has so many more potential use-cases in healthcare, but not enough case-studies to prove just how feasible it is for all organizations to adopt it.

These 3 headlines are among those few case-studies that are rapidly emerging.

It’s as though every day a new healthcare organization adopts AI and shares it with the world, allowing all of us to learn from their experiences and improve our organizations accordingly.

Hopefully these case-studies get you thinking about more ways to incorporate AI into your business.

TL;DR

  • Houston Methodist used AI and computer vision to increase OR capacity by 15%.
  • The AWS and MSK partnership will create a new data resource for cancer research.
  • OpenEvidence has been valued at $1 billion because of its chatbot for doctors.
  • These headlines exemplify 3 different uses of AI in healthcare: efficiency, research, and supporting point-of-care diagnostics. .
